The most important thing anyone suffering with mental health issues needs to know is that every day you wake up, you succeed.
There have been many times when I thought there was no way I could live a successful life. There have been just as many times when I never thought I’d be more than a girl battling anxiety; that I would never be anything more than a statistic. There have been countless times when I never thought I could do this or that; many times when I felt like there was no light at the end of the tunnel; that this thing called anxiety would forever be my definition.
If I had listened those millions of times when I tried convincing myself that I would be nothing, that is exactly what I would be. If I allowed myself to become convinced that there was nothing more to my life than irrational fears and anxiety, and that I don’t deserve nor will I ever live a normal life, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
But I am here today because I made the choice to be.
Yes, there have been times when I’ve woken up and thought, “Ugh! I’m exhausted. Is this really worth it?” And then I remember, I just survived one more day.
The reality is, every day you wake up, you succeed. You may not feel like it and you may not even wish to succeed at this given time, but you have. You’ve succeeded one more day; you’ve overcome your struggles from yesterday and yes, today is presented with new fears but you’re stronger and one step closer to being who and what you want to be.
It’s so easy to get sucked into the negative thoughts that come with mental health issues. You are your own worst critic, your own worst enemy and your thoughts will control you if you let them. Your life may not be where you thought it would be 5 years ago and you may not feel the way you wish you felt but you’re here, and you’ve survived yet another day. You may be convinced that you haven’t made any progress but every day you wake up, that is progress.
It’s a choice.
Every day, you have a choice. You have a choice to let your anxiety, depression and other mental health issues define you; to guide you along this journey called life. Or, you have the choice to prevail. You have the choice to heal; to live the life you want but it has to be a choice.
You can continue to suffer from your mental health issues or you can choose to do something positive with it. Everyone has a story; everyone has their struggles but what separates you from the rest is the choice; the choice to take the trauma, the fear and the struggles, and do something positive with it. Just look at the various mental health success stories. These people chose to prevail and you can too.
And trust me, it isn’t always an easy decision to make. You’re so used to beating yourself down that building yourself up can seem impossible. Overcoming mental health issues isn’t easy. It will be hard. Healing mentally and emotionally won’t come naturally. There will be challenges and times where you wonder if all the effort and exhaustion is worth it.
But then you wake up another day. You realize that you’re one day closer to living the life you want.
You just have to be willing to work for it. You have to choose to no longer let your mental health issues determine your destiny and you have to be willing to wake up every day realizing that you made it another day.
You always have a choice. No one want take that away from you.
And I promise you, one day you will be where I am today. You will look back and say, “Wow! I did that? I never thought it was possible.” And that feeling with continue with every new day you decide to wake up and take control of your own life.
So, I encourage you to make the choice to succeed. Decide to live, to overcome and to heal, and you will receive.
