Madeline Merlo’s “War Paint” song changed my life, and I promise it will do the same for you if you battle mental health or know someone who is.

Recently, I’ve been on this whole, “It’s okay to not be okay” kick, and I even wrote a blog post about a song that spoke volumes to me. However, I didn’t tell you what the song actually was.

#AmateurFail

To be honest, I actually had no idea what the song was. I just knew the words, “It’s okay not to be okay”. However, just the other day,  in the midst of driving in the good ole’ country of Canada, I turned on the radio and heard those 6 words that would spark a ray of hope inside of me all over again.

“It’s okay not to be okay”.

This time, I made sure to find out who wrote this powerful, world-changing song. It’s called “War Paint” by Madeline Merlo. She’s a Canadian country singer and songwriter, and is she ever!

This song is the perfect motivation for anxiety sufferers, people dealing with depression, mental health or really, just anyone having one hell of a bad day. We’ve all been there, and the lyrics are a simple reminder that you’re not alone.

So, let these lyrics change your world the way they did mine. Let them be your source of motivation in the morning when it feels like you just can’t do this thing called “life” anymore. I swear, it’ll change you and the way you battle your mental health forever.

The Huffington Post did an amazing interview with Madeline and this song. Madeline talks about the profound loss she experienced that ultimately inspired her to write it all out and wear it on like war paint. She had “a friend who battled with her mental health and ended up losing that battle,” and instead of writing a sad song, she wanted to write something that evoked emotion and gave people just like you and I hope.

War Paint Lyrics

It’s okay to not be okay<
When even the air you breathe is just too much for your lungs to take
And all the words that you don’t say
I hear your SOS on the radio as you’re driving away
C’mon pick up your phone
You don’t have to face it alone
I’m gonna fight with you and for you
Yeah I want you to know…

I will stand your ground
I’ll kiss your battle scars
And leave my XO mark till you can feel it
Can you feel it

You can call my name
I’ll hold your hand grenade
Keep all your secrets safe ’til you can see me
Can you see me coming?

Running for ya
Dead of night
Can you hear me?
Holla you’re alright

I’ll take your fears and wipe your eyes
And wear it all like war paint
Wear it all like war paint
Wear it all like war paint

I see gold,
When you’re black and blue
I love the colours burning beautiful
That you wanna use
When all you want is to get out alive
You don’t have to cry for me to hear your battle cry

C’mon turn on your light
I’ve been waiting all night
To fight with you
And for you
When all your flags are white

I will stand your ground
I’ll kiss your battle scars
And leave my XO mark till you can feel it
Can you feel it?

You can call my name
I’ll hold your hand grenade
Keep all your secrets safe
’til you can see me can you see me coming?
Running for ya
Dead of night
Can you hear me?
Holla you’re alright

I’ll take your fears and wipe your eyes
And wear it all like war paint
Wear it all like war paint
Wear it all like war paint
Wear it all like war paint
Wear it all like war paint
