- Reviewed in Canada on January 25, 2025Verified PurchaseIn my opinion, this book is the epitome and magnum opus of all books written on anxiety. This book won't be of any help to those who suffer from regular or healthy amounts of anxiety, but those who suffer from an actual disorder such as general anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and/or any type of phobia will GREATLY benefit from this book. This book gives you the literal key into how to cure yourself of all of these mental health issues, regardless of people's claims that some if not most are chronic. Absolutely life changing - if you're ready to fully recover from whatever it is you suffer from, read this book.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 25, 2010Verified PurchaseThis book has the most accurate title - it really gives hope, but not only. This book teaches you how to cope with anxiety and panic attacks. More importantly it teaches how to eliminate constant fear and dread about those attacks. As a result the symptoms are getting milder, the setbacks become less severe, the mood after setbacks doesn't drop like a rock, overall functioning improves vastly.
I can hardly think of something else one who suffers from those horrible illnesses should ever read. The language is predating recent terminology, so I think maybe this is why this book is overlooked. My social worker for example who helped me to go through the period didn't know about it and she has great experience and knows her profession very well. The book is so old it talks about shock treatment for depression!
The book is golden - a must read for anybody suffering from nervous illness, and also is going to help anybody who tries to help/assist such people.
Highly recommended!

- Reviewed in Canada on December 20, 2013Verified PurchaseAfter having serious panic attacks and developing phobias and OCD behaviours since 2007 life seemed to be stuck in the past and it seemed to hurtful to continue even living.
I never thought that stopping medication after 6 years could be so difficult really, so I stopped and everything seemed OK, but 2 months later PUM!!! the big shock I had the biggest relapse ever! couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, couldn't drive, work, or anything, I was just NOT self sufficient and yes I was completely in a downward spiral towards the most hurtful place a human being could ever experience.
I end up in the hospital for the 5th time in my life 'cause this anxiety was something I just couldn't cope. I was admitted in psychiatric help and I just remember screaming "Please put me back on meds or do just something to remove this nightmare I am living in!!!". The doctor didn't seemed to impress with my desperation and she just told me: "I can't medicate you, this is a battle you need to overcome just using your mind and no medication is necessarily, but wait, she said: I have a plan for you, go back home and read this book starting tomorrow and come back in a week"
It's been 3 months since that happened and even though I am not completely fine, I could say I feel 80% better, I haven't been so disciplined applying the techniques either because I feel that I can cope with the way I am feeling now. It is really sad but you have the tendency of feeling just bad and you just get used to.
Other thing that has really helped me has been mindfulness meditation, and I think that this kind of meditation is exactly what Dr. Weekes meant when she said on the chapter that talks about Masterly Inactivity it is exactly what mindfulness meditation is about. This meditation has been shown by scientific proofs that not only change the way you perceive the world it actually does change your brain wires or whatever physically.
Conclusion. As the Dr. Weekes said: The first step for your recovery is the understanding of your illness, and this part is given by the book the second half is definitely the practice. I will update my review once I feel 100% cured, because I know I will be there soon.
Dr. Weekes truly truly truly saved my life. I know everybody wrote the same but I don't feel any way different than this. God bless this lovely woman.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 11, 2016Verified PurchaseThis book has really helped me. The moderate to severe panic attacks stopped after about 2 weeks once I started using the methods described in the book. I still feel minor attacks coming on, but the book helped me to recognize them early and how to stop them from getting hold of me. Now they come and go but don't dictate my lifestyle like before. By using the methods taught in the book, they only last a couple minutes and then go away. I highly recommend the book to anybody suffering from Anxiety or Panic Attacks or anybody who is helping a loved one through them.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 4, 2016Verified PurchaseIf your issues are nervous anxiety and panic attacks then this book will help you understand what is going on in your body which is sometimes half the battle in recovery. It is written especially for those who have poor concentration and very to the point . No flowery speech just the facts presented and sometimes in funy stories. Loved it and it has been a book I have recommended to friends and have reread over and over again. Well worth reading ....

5.0 out of 5 stars Le meilleur livre sur l’anxiété que j’ai lu
Verified PurchaseAprès avoir lu au moins 15-20 libres sur le sujet, il m’apparaît clair que celui-ci est exceptionnel.
C’est aberrant à quel point la peur peut diriger nos vies quand on ne sait pas quoi faire avec.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Outdated however some good points
Verified PurchaseThe first 40% of this book is good with some valid points to guide you, however the rest is very outdated being written in the early 60's, Dr Weekes refers to electric shock treatment and taking sedatives on a regular basis together with staying in bed for days at a time. Also if you are living on your own and do not have much or any family this book is Not for you, there are much better books on the market from the 2020's to now.
Summing-up i don't recommend this read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book so far
Verified PurchaseI haven‘t finished it yet but it is the first information source that integrates the feeling of guilt and shame in an anxiety disorder. I skipped chapters that weren‘t helpful for me however. So far the focus is more on a systemic understanding and related advice than on a deeper understanding of where the roots of anxiety can be found.
Will edit and provide a final review after completing the book.

Verified PurchaseIf you are going through an issue that is beyond the diagnostic capacity of medical science and they gave you some fancy terms like IBS, Functional Dyspepsia, Fibromyalgia, Anxiety disorder etc. then you must read this book, You will come to know that It is nothing but your nerves paying havoc with you and how to overcome that, It takes time and perseverance but worth giving a try...
