But once you’ve made that brave decision to seek mental health support, the next challenge is figuring out where to turn. With so many mental health services available today, including online mental health help, it’s important to find care that truly fits your unique needs.

Here’s how to navigate the search for mental health help that genuinely works for you.

Know What You’re Looking For

The term “mental health support” covers a wide spectrum, from crisis hotlines to licensed therapy to peer support groups. Understanding what kind of help you need will save you time and frustration.

Here are a few common support types:

  • Individual therapy: One-on-one sessions with a licensed professional.
  • Group therapy: Guided sessions with others facing similar issues.
  • Support groups: Peer-led or informal gatherings, or an online support community.
  • Psychiatric care: For medication management.
  • Online platforms: Flexible access to licensed therapists remotely.

If you’re not sure where to start, individual therapy is often a good entry point, especially if you’re seeking privacy, tailored strategies, or support with anxiety, trauma, or depression.

Check Credentials and Licensing

It’s essential that the person you’re trusting with your mental health is trained and certified. Look for professionals who are licensed in your province or state. In Canada, for instance, therapy in Vancouver should be provided by a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), psychologist, or another certified provider.
