Once the waves of panic subside with the deactivation of the fight or flight response, a lingering aftermath remains. The chemicals released during the panic attack contribute to a feeling of sensitization and general anxiety, persisting for hours after the episode.

Step 4

Now ensues the fear of another panic attack, perpetuating an anxious state of mind. Believing avoidance is the key to preventing further attacks, individuals start evading situations or places that might trigger another episode.

Because of the constant vigilance for the next panic attack, the body remains in a perpetually anxious and sensitized state. This tension perpetuates the cycle, generating more anxious bodily sensations and circling back to stage 1 – establishing the panic loop.
